Details
Felice Giardini, once the toast of London’s concert halls, turns inward with an intimate duet for two cellos, a voice he would carry farther from home than he ever imagined, all the way to Moscow. Bohuslav Martinů, an expatriate in Paris, laces his Serenade with the wit and folk rhythms of a Czech homeland he can only reach in memory. Franz Schubert, in the last weeks of his life, called his music “the product of my genius and my misery,” and nowhere is that truer than in the String Quintet, written as his health failed and left unheard by the world for twenty-two years.
