Musicologist and composer Paul Epstein once described the four movements of Haydn’s “Lark” Quartet as “a story, a song, a dance, and a party,” capturing the vivid emotions and narratives that music can evoke. This season-opening program embodies that same spirit, with each piece reflecting profound stories and personal experiences. Golijov’s “Tenebrae” for String Quartet emerges from the composer’s encounter with contrasting realities, blending serenity with turbulence. Meanwhile, Brahms’ String Quartet Op. 51 No. 2 is deeply rooted in the life mottos shared between him and his close friend, the renowned violinist Joseph Joachim, offering an intimate glimpse into their enduring bond.
