The annual Monsignor John J. Curran Lecture & Book Prize will be held in the Burke Auditorium at King’s College at 6:30 PM on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Independent scholar Mitch Troutman will be the speaker, presenting a talk titled “Bootleg Coal Mining in Northeastern Pennsylvania, 1925-1942.” The talk will be based on his book, The Bootleg Coal Rebellion: The Pennsylvania Miners Who Seized an Industry: 1925–1942 (PM Press, 2022), focusing on the thriving (though illegal) coal mining which took place mainly in the southern anthracite coal fields before, during, and after the Great Depression.

Mitch will also receive the Anthracite Heritage Foundation Book Award, a prize given each year to honor a work that highlights key aspects of the hard coal industry in the northeastern part of the state.
